While on a vacation in West Texas, you can’t skip Marfa! This small desert city first hit the map in the 70’s, when renowned artist Donald Judd transformed an old Army base into The Chinati Foundation. This contemporary art space hosts a series of art installations that expertly combine large-scale sculptures with nature, and made Marfa a crowd favorite of art lovers worldwide.

For a Texas winter vacation, you won’t forget, head to San Antonio. As one of the best Christmas towns in Texas, this city is filled with fun winter activities for every type of traveler. I recommend checking out the Riverwalk, which is lit up every year for the holidays.

San Antonio enjoys a mild winter, making it a great time to also check out the theme parks with fewer crowds.

6. Travel to Austin for a Texas Winter Trip

Austin is a great spot to visit no matter the season! During December, there are plenty of holiday events to enjoy, like driving through the beautiful Trail of Lights or COTA’s Peppermint Parkway. Beyond the holidays, there are tons of things to do in Austin in the wintertime – check out this post

7. Spend a Winter Weekend in Waco, Texas

Waco makes the list of top winter vacation ideas in Texas for a few reasons: while many flock to this Central Texas town to visit the Magnolia empire created by HGTV-famous Chip and Jo Gaines, there’s even more to the sleepy town locals call “The Heart of Texas.”

After you check out Magnolia Market and Magnolia Table, consider taking a trip to Waco Mammoth National Monument to dig for fossils with little ones. Or, take a walking tour of Waco to get a peek at eateries and notable spots both inside and outside of the Fixer-Upper universe.

8. Escape the Winter at South Padre Island

Visitors travel from all over the country to this winter getaway in Texas, and for good reason. Boasting lovely weather and sunny skies throughout its coldest months, South Padre Island is a great spot for a Texas winter vacation.

Collect seashells along the beach, cast a fishing line into the water, or simply relax in a beach chair while listening to the waves crash. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see sea turtles hatch while you’re there!

10. Head to Houston, Texas

Houston is one of my favorite destinations for winter vacations in Texas. There’s just so much to do to get in the holiday spirit and enjoy the cool weather! One spot you won’t want to miss is the Discovery Green outdoor ice skating rink

If you’ve got some shopping to do, head over to The Galleria. You can easily spend a whole day walking through the shops, scoping out the holiday decorations, and tearing it up at the indoor ice skating rink. Or, see the incredible holiday displays at Houston Zoo Lights.

11. Cruise Down to Corpus Christi, Texas

Much like South Padre Island, Corpus Christi is a great spot for a winter getaway in Texas if you want to enjoy a little peace and quiet near the ocean. Most people flock to Corpus Christi in the summer, so during the winter you’ll largely have the beach to yourself. Build a bonfire on the sand to roast s’mores, take long walks along the beach, and if you’re feeling bold, take a dip in the chilly water!
