Road Trip Apps: Planning
Roadtrippers App
Use Roadtrippers to plan the ultimate road trip! This app helps you find tons of cool spots like local dining spots, quirky roadside attractions, scenic points, and more. They also offer awesome pre-made road trip guides!
This app helps you plan your next pit stop! It can show you what store/restaurants and amenities are at upcoming exits. It also shows you gas information, including which station is the cheapest at each exit.
This app helps guide road trippers to nearby oddities and attractions. It also allows you to save places in “Things to Do” or “Want to Do” lists that you can check off as you see places!
While not free and only available on iPhones, the Roadside America app lets you see all the wonderful and weird roadside attractions that America has to offer. From historical landmarks, to bizarre museums and attractions, this app is worth the $2.99!

Road Trip - Scenic Route Planner App
The Scenic Route planner app uses an algorithm to guide you to your destination along the nicest, most scenic roads! You can create your own custom itinerary and find points of interest along the drive too!
The GasBuddy app helps you find the cheapest gas prices around and offer special discounts too! Download in the App Store or Google Play.
TripIt: Travel Planner
You book it, and TripIt organizes everything into a neat and tidy itinerary: As soon as you book a flight, tour, hotel, car, etc, simply forward it to plans@tripit.com and they’ll add it to your master itinerary — it’s genius!
I haven’t tried it myself yet, but it has over 172,000 reviews in the Apple App Store with an average of 4.8 stars! Download in the App Store or Google Play.
Road Trip Apps: Navigation
Google Maps
I prefer Google Maps over Waze, but that’s just personal preference. No matter what app you like, you definitely need to have some sort of navigation app on your phone before embarking on a road trip!
Many people prefer Waze and say it can find you better and faster routes. I do like that they alert you when there are police ahead trying to catch speeders 😉
TollGuru is another great app for planning out your route with toll roads. It can calculate the cheapest and fastest toll routes along your trip. You can even your vehicles information (like make and model), it’s fuel efficiency rates, and estimate costs based on fuel prices.
Probably the most classic road trip game now has an app that helps you easily keep track of all the state license plates you see and event tells you fun facts about each one!

Mad Libs App
Remember Mad Libs? Well they’ve got an app now! I used to love this as a kid, and now you can play on long road trips!
Spotify is my personal favorite for listening to music. Invite your friends/travel buddies to contribute to your road trip playlist, that way all passengers can add music they like! Just be sure to download the playlists to your phone beforehand so you don’t lose your tunes when driving through an area with no service.
I am late to the Podcast game, but have recently become obsessed with them — especially Crime Junkie! A long road trip is the perfect time to check out some new podcasts! There are lots of different apps to listen with:
This app will literally help you find the closest public bathroom whenever you’re traveling. It has a database of over 200,000 public toilets around the world!
Hopefully you never have to use this app, but if you do… Blink offers fast and affordable roadside assistance from a reliable nationwide roadside assistance service network.
The Skyroam App and it’s device connects you to WIFI almost anywhere in the world! I used this all throughout my trip in Europe and absolutely love it. Read more about SkyRoam here.
